The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports suggesting that he is planning to run for president in 2027, describing the claims as false, mischievous, and politically motivated.
In a statement released by his media office, Wike clarified that he has no intention of contesting against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next general election, insisting that he remains fully loyal to the President and committed to the success of his administration.
According to the statement, the rumours were being circulated by individuals seeking to create tension between Wike and the Presidency. His aides described the speculation as “cheap blackmail” aimed at distracting the minister from his duties in the FCT.
“The Minister has not told anyone, either privately or publicly, that he intends to run for president in 2027. His focus is on delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu,” the statement read.
Speaking at a recent event in Abuja, Wike also urged Nigerians to disregard social media propaganda, stressing that public discourse should be based on facts and not falsehood.
“I am committed to working with President Tinubu to transform the Federal Capital Territory. I have no interest in any political games or future ambitions being spread around by mischief-makers,” he said.
Political observers note that this clarification is coming amid growing rumours of underground political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections. However, Wike’s firm denial appears aimed at reinforcing his current alliance with President Tinubu and maintaining focus on governance within the FCT.
