Expert Warns of Growing Antibiotic Resistance in Kebbi’s Livestock

A veterinary expert from Sokoto has sounded the alarm over the rising threat of antibiotic resistance among livestock in Kebbi State, warning that the misuse of veterinary drugs could endanger animal health, food safety, and human wellbeing across the region.

Speaking at a recent stakeholders’ engagement on antimicrobial use in livestock production, the Sokoto-based academic highlighted how unregulated access to antibiotics and poor adherence to dosage guidelines are fueling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in northwestern Nigeria.

“Many livestock farmers administer antibiotics without proper veterinary supervision, often using human medicines or incorrect dosages,” the expert cautioned. “This practice not only reduces the effectiveness of vital drugs but also poses serious health risks through contaminated meat and dairy products.”

He urged authorities to enforce existing regulations on veterinary drug sales, strengthen farmer education, and promote biosecurity and vaccination as safer disease control alternatives.

The warning comes as Kebbi and Sokoto State governments intensify efforts to improve animal health management through vaccination drives and training programs for livestock stakeholders.

Experts say rising AMR could threaten Nigeria’s livestock industry, undermining food security and reducing export potential if urgent action is not taken.
