The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Federal Government of Nigeria have launched a joint initiative to enhance food security and strengthen the animal feed industry across West Africa.

The effort, under the Productive, Resilient and Healthy Agropastoral Systems in West Africa (PRISMA) project, targets key challenges affecting livestock productivity particularly the high cost, poor quality, and limited availability of animal feed.

At a regional workshop in Abuja, Mr. Konlani Kanfitin of ECOWAS’ agriculture agency said the region’s livestock sector faces significant feed constraints. He noted that ECOWAS has begun establishing feed-supply centres, developing online feed platforms, and harmonising feed-analysis standards.

Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Chinyere Akujobi, said the government’s National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy (NLGAS) 2025–2035 aligns with the regional initiative to boost local feed production and reduce import dependence.

“A strong local and regional animal feed industry will reduce reliance on imports and strengthen food sovereignty,” she said.

The ECOWAS-FG collaboration aims to improve livestock productivity, create jobs, and enhance resilience against food insecurity across the sub-region. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
