Mexican authorities on Wednesday announced the arrest of Jorge Armando ‘N,’ suspected of orchestrating the assassination of Carlos Manzo, the popular opposition mayor of Uruapan in Michoacan. Manzo, a vocal critic of the federal government’s security policies, was shot and killed on November 1 during a public Day of the Dead celebration while with his family, sparking national outrage and mass protests. Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch said the suspect is linked to a criminal group operating for the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
Jocomms Correspondent reports that authorities identified the suspect through analysis of cell phones recovered from previously detained individuals, which revealed a messaging group used to coordinate the attack. “This arrest represents a key step in dismantling the criminal structure responsible for this attack,” Garcia said at a press conference, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat organized crime in the region. Following Manzo’s murder, President Claudia Sheinbaum deployed over 10,500 security personnel to Michoacan under a new strategy targeting extortion networks and criminal gangs. Manzo’s wife has since assumed the mayoral role in Uruapan.
Several other suspects in the assassination have been arrested or neutralized, including a minor, though authorities have yet to confirm the precise motive behind the attack. As the investigation continues, questions remain about the reach of organized crime and the effectiveness of government measures to protect public officials.
