Gambia has confirmed that it is temporarily hosting Cameroonian opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary following the disputed October 12 presidential election that handed President Paul Biya an eighth term in office. In a statement issued on Sunday, Gambia’s Ministry of Information said Tchiroma arrived in the country on November 7 and is being sheltered solely on humanitarian grounds to ensure his safety amid escalating unrest in Cameroon.
The Gambian government noted that it is working closely with regional partners, including Nigeria, to facilitate a peaceful and negotiated resolution to the post-election crisis. Tchiroma’s spokesperson, Alice Nkom, also confirmed his presence in Gambia, reinforcing concerns over political tensions after deadly protests erupted in Cameroon. Tchiroma insists he won the election and has urged citizens to reject Biya’s victory, a position that has intensified the standoff with the government.
Cameroon’s authorities, however, have accused the opposition leader of repeatedly calling for insurrection and have signalled plans to begin legal proceedings against him. As regional efforts intensify to restore stability, will the crisis in Cameroon de-escalate before it spirals further out of control? Visit www.jocomms.com for more news
