FEC Greenlights Nationwide Upgrade of Airport Navigation Systems

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved significant upgrades to Nigeria’s airport navigation and communication systems, in a move aimed at modernizing aviation infrastructure and enhancing air safety across the country.

The approval, announced by Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, covers multiple key airports, including Murtala Muhammed International Airport (Lagos) and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (Abuja). The upgrades will include the installation of Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control Systems (A‑SMGCS) to monitor runway activity and improve ground safety operations.

As part of the initiative, new modular air‑traffic control towers will be constructed at eight airports nationwide. Additionally, an aeronautical frequency monitoring and interference-detection system will be deployed to strengthen communication between ground controllers, tower personnel, and aircraft. VHF radio communication systems at nine major airports including Lagos, Port Harcourt, Ilorin, Abuja, Kano, Maiduguri, Sokoto, and Wukari will also be upgraded.

“These upgrades are crucial for enhancing air safety and modernizing our aviation infrastructure to meet international standards,” Minister Keyamo said.

The initiative forms part of broader investments in Nigeria’s aviation sector. Earlier in 2025, the FEC approved nearly N987 billion for nationwide airport infrastructure improvements, including terminal renovations, runway lighting, and security enhancements.

Aviation experts say the new systems will improve operational efficiency, reduce delays, and mitigate risks during landing and takeoff, particularly at busy and congested airports.

With these approvals, Nigeria is taking a significant step toward modernizing its air transport infrastructure and ensuring safer skies for passengers nationwide. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
