A bird strike at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport caused significant disruption at the domestic terminal, leaving over 100 passengers stranded and prompting immediate intervention from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
The incident involved a United Nigeria Airlines (UNA) aircraft bound for Owerri, which collided with a bird, forcing the airline to cancel several flights. Frustrated passengers, citing poor communication from the airline, reportedly vandalized property and clashed with airport staff and security personnel.
The NCAA quickly stepped in to restore order. Spokesperson Michael Achimugu addressed the passengers, explaining the situation and detailing the airline’s remedial measures.
United Nigeria Airlines confirmed the aircraft was withdrawn for mandatory technical inspections and apologized for the disruption. The airline rescheduled the affected flights for 10 a.m. the following day and offered a 15 percent discount on future bookings. NCAA also instructed the airline to send formal confirmations to passengers and pledged to monitor compliance.
Bird strikes, collisions between aircraft and birds during takeoff or landing, are a known aviation hazard that can damage engines or aircraft components. The incident raises questions about passenger safety and the effectiveness of crisis communication during such unforeseen events. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
