Nigeria Cracks Down on Illegal Road Levies: JRB Bans Taxes, Stickers, and Checkpoints Nationwide

In a landmark move to curb illegal taxation and harassment of motorists, the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) has announced a nationwide ban on road taxes, the issuance of stickers, and the operation of unauthorized checkpoints across Nigeria.

The directive is part of broader reforms under the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Act, 2025, which transformed the former Joint Tax Board into the JRB, tasked with harmonizing and coordinating revenue collection at the federal, state, and FCT levels.

According to the JRB, any collection of road-related taxes or sticker fees outside the officially sanctioned processes is now prohibited. The Board also warned that illegal checkpoints, often used to extort motorists, will be dismantled nationwide.

The reform aims to reduce the cost of road transport, protect motorists from harassment, and eliminate multiple taxation that have long affected the price of goods and services. Authorities have urged all federal and state agencies to fully comply with the new directive ahead of its full implementation in early 2026.

Motorists and transport unions have welcomed the move, describing it as a long-awaited step toward ensuring fair and lawful revenue practices on Nigerian roads. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
