Can Nigeria Keep the Lights On? Gas Shortages Force Nationwide Drop in Power Supply

Share

Nigeria’s electricity supply has declined nationwide following acute gas supply shortages affecting several power generation companies (GenCos), industry sources have confirmed.

The shortfall has forced many gas-fired power plants to scale down operations or shut units entirely, leading to reduced electricity sent to the national grid. As a result, consumers across different regions are experiencing longer outages and weaker power availability.

Thermal plants, which make up the bulk of Nigeria’s grid-connected generation capacity, rely heavily on steady natural gas supply to operate efficiently. Disruptions in gas delivery linked to supply constraints and longstanding commercial challenges in the energy sector have once again exposed the vulnerability of the country’s power system.

Sector analysts note that liquidity problems remain a major contributor to the crisis. Delayed payments within the electricity value chain have made it difficult for GenCos to meet obligations to gas suppliers, discouraging consistent supply and investment in infrastructure.

Electricity authorities say they are monitoring the situation closely, while stakeholders are calling for urgent measures to stabilize gas supply, resolve payment bottlenecks, and strengthen coordination between gas producers and power generators to prevent further deterioration in electricity supply.

Until these issues are addressed, experts warn that power fluctuations may persist, especially during periods of high demand. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
