US President Donald Trump has sparked widespread global attention after posting an image on his social media platform, Truth Social, that portrays him as the “Acting President of Venezuela”, effective January 2026. The image resembles a Wikipedia-style profile showing Trump’s portrait and the title alongside his roles as the 45th and 47th President of the United States.
The post appears to be a provocative statement amid heightened geopolitical tensions involving Venezuela, following a recent US military operation in which Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife were captured and flown to New York to face federal charges.
Despite the online post, no country, international organisation or official Venezuelan authority recognises Trump as Venezuela’s acting president. In fact, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in earlier this month as interim president under the Venezuelan constitutional process.
Analysts say the Truth Social image is symbolic and controversial, reflecting Washington’s announced intention to oversee Venezuela’s transition period and control over key assets—especially its oil resources—following military intervention. However, the claim remains outside international legal norms and raises complex questions about sovereignty and diplomatic consequences.
