Electricity Distribution Companies Lose ₦44 Billion in October – NERC

Nigeria’s electricity distribution companies (DisCos) recorded a ₦44.27 billion revenue shortfall in October 2025, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
The commission reported that DisCos received electricity worth ₦303.85 billion from the national grid but billed only ₦255.19 billion, resulting in a billing efficiency of approximately 83.9%. Of this amount, only ₦210.92 billion was collected, leaving a gap of ₦44.27 billion between billed and collected revenue.
The shortfall underscores ongoing billing and collection inefficiencies in the sector, which limit the ability of DisCos to pay generation companies and invest in infrastructure upgrades. NERC emphasized that unless metering coverage improves and Aggregate Technical, Commercial, and Collection (ATC&C) losses are reduced, the power sector will continue to face financial strain.
Performance among the 11 DisCos varied significantly:
Top performers: Kano DisCo (98.05%), Eko DisCo (95.71%), Ikeja DisCo (94.36%)
Lower performers: Benin DisCo (65.32%), Yola DisCo (66.03%), Ibadan DisCo (73.51%)
The commission’s report highlights the urgent need for structural reforms to improve revenue collection and ensure the financial sustainability of Nigeria’s electricity distribution sector. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
