United States Suspends Immigrant Visa Processing for Nigerians, Others from 75 Countries

The United States Government has announced a suspension of immigrant visa processing for applicants from about 75 countries, including Nigeria, with the directive set to take effect from January 21, 2026.

The announcement was made on Wednesday through an official statement posted on the White House’s verified X account. According to the U.S. government, the decision was driven by concerns that migrants from the affected countries rely excessively on public welfare funded by American taxpayers.

Authorities stated that the temporary halt would remain in force until adequate measures are in place to ensure that incoming immigrants do not place what it described as an undue economic burden on the United States. The government added that the move was aimed at protecting national economic interests while immigration systems undergo further review.

The suspension applies strictly to immigrant visa categories and is expected to remain indefinite as U.S. officials reassess existing immigration vetting and processing frameworks.
