Senegal edged hosts Morocco 1–0 after extra time on Sunday night to lift the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title in Rabat, in a final overshadowed by controversy, lengthy stoppages and repeated interruptions.
The dramatic showdown at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium was thrown into chaos late in normal time after Morocco were awarded a disputed penalty following a VAR review, triggering furious protests from Senegal’s players. The decision, given deep into stoppage time, led to several minutes of confrontation as players surrounded the referee, forcing a prolonged halt in play.
Tensions escalated further when players from both sides briefly left the pitch before returning after intervention from match officials and security. Morocco’s Brahim Díaz then squandered the penalty, with Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy brilliantly saving his Panenka attempt, inflaming an already charged atmosphere.
With regulation time ending scoreless, the final moved into extra time. Senegal struck the decisive blow in the 94th minute as Pape Gueye unleashed a thunderous long-range shot into the top corner. Morocco pressed desperately for an equaliser, rattling the crossbar and forcing late saves, but Senegal stood firm.
The contest stretched well beyond its scheduled duration due to protests, VAR consultations and crowd unrest. In the end, Senegal emerged victorious to claim the AFCON crown in one of the most dramatic and controversial finals in recent tournament history, played before a packed home crowd in Rabat.
