Fish farmers in Ogun State have recorded a remarkable ₦9.17 billion in revenue thanks to the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP) aquaculture support programme.
The initiative, designed to boost local aquaculture production and improve farmers’ incomes, has benefited 4,256 fish farmers across the state. Through the programme, the government provided 195,436 bags of fish feed at a subsidised rate, investing around ₦2.75 billion to ensure sustainable growth in the sector.
As a result, the farmers collectively produced approximately 4,256 metric tonnes of fish, contributing significantly to local food security and reducing dependency on imported fish. Modern infrastructure, including cold rooms, smoking kilns, and solar-powered freezers, has also been installed in major fish farm clusters such as Eriwe and Ikangba, helping to reduce post-harvest losses and add value to the produce.
OGSTEP’s support extends beyond aquaculture. 1,272 poultry farmers have similarly benefited from feed and production assistance, highlighting the programme’s broader commitment to transforming agriculture in the state.
Officials, including Ogun’s Commissioner for Agriculture, emphasised that the success of the programme demonstrates the positive impact of well-targeted government interventions in making agriculture profitable and economically sustainable. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
