Barcelona president Joan Laporta has described teenage midfielder Dro Fernández’s decision to leave the club for a proposed move to Paris Saint-Germain as “unpleasant,” especially after the player had previously agreed to renew his contract with the Catalan giants.
The 18-year-old is set to join PSG, with reports in the Spanish media claiming the French champions will pay slightly more than his €6 million ($7m) release clause as a goodwill gesture.
“We will speak when everything is finalised. It has been an unpleasant situation,” Laporta told Catalunya Radio late on Sunday.
“It was a surprise because we had agreed on a different solution for when he turned 18,” he added.
“Unexpectedly, his representative informed us that he could not honour what we had agreed.”
Laporta suggested Barcelona could still “change the situation as it was presented” to them, hinting that the club may receive up to €8.5 million from PSG instead of the amount stipulated in Dro’s release clause.
Dro, a native of Galicia in north-west Spain, joined Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy in 2022 and has gone on to make eight first-team appearances.
Earlier this month, Barça head coach Hansi Flick also expressed his disappointment over the midfielder’s imminent departure.
“What I want to say to the young players from La Masia is that we are Barça, one of the best teams in the world,” said the German coach, who handed Dro his senior debut in September 2025.
“We give them the opportunity to train, to grow every day with the best players in the world. We support them, we believe in them and we give them confidence.
“If you want to play for Barça, you must do it 100 per cent, with your whole heart. These colours must be lived. That is what I want to see. Anyone who cannot do that, I do not want.”
