Share

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to climate‑smart agriculture after successful pilot projects that reduced emissions and strengthened farming resilience.
Dr. Marcus Ogunbiyi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, said Nigeria’s Climate Change Act of 2021 provides the framework for sustainable, low-emission agricultural practices. The government’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) emphasize both mitigation and adaptation in agriculture.
Pilot initiatives under the SLCP Abatement Project introduced improved crop techniques, better residue management, and alternatives to open-field burning, benefiting communities including Gboko, Benue State. These measures enhanced soil health, reduced emissions, and supported farmers’ livelihoods.
Officials highlighted the role of partners like Self Help Africa and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) in scaling these initiatives and building farmer capacity.
“Climate-smart agriculture is vital for food security, environmental sustainability, and resilient rural livelihoods,” Dr. Ogunbiyi said. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
