President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the leader of the Afenifere socio-political group, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, as a steadfast voice for Nigeria’s unity and the dignity of its citizens, praising his lifelong commitment to justice, education, and democratic values.
The President made the remarks on Monday in Akure, Ondo State, during the celebration of Pa Fasoranti’s 100th birthday. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu said the elder statesman dedicated much of his life to defending the underrepresented and speaking against oppression.
He commended the Afenifere leader for his contributions to education, democracy, and national development, noting that his decades of advocacy had earned him honour and respect across generations.
According to the President, Fasoranti rejected silence in the face of injustice and consistently stood for fairness, compassion, and the protection of vulnerable Nigerians.
Tinubu said the elder statesman remained committed to justice even during difficult political periods when dissent attracted threats and intimidation, adding that his role in promoting peace and unity through fairness had distinguished him as a respected national figure.
The President also praised Fasoranti’s enduring belief in education, describing him as a lifelong teacher whose influence now extends beyond the classroom to the conscience of the nation.
During the event, Vice President Shettima, on behalf of the President, commissioned a landmark flyover project in Akure, which was later named after Pa Fasoranti by Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Governor Aiyedatiwa described the centenarian as a symbol of integrity, principled leadership, and selfless public service, saying his life reflected dedication to truth, justice, and societal values.
The governor noted that Fasoranti never traded principles for convenience and had remained committed to the ideals of honesty and responsible leadership throughout his life.
Also speaking at the event, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun described Fasoranti as an iconic Nigerian and prayed for continued strength and prosperity for the elder statesman.
In a speech read by his younger sister, Olori Rachel Tubosun Falae, Pa Fasoranti thanked President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima, governors, traditional rulers, family members, old students, and guests for celebrating with him.
Reflecting on his life, the Afenifere leader said he had witnessed colonial rule, independence, war, military rule, and democracy, adding that faith in God, hard work, and service to humanity had sustained him through the years.
He urged younger Nigerians to embrace sacrificial leadership, maintain integrity in public office, and avoid bitterness in political life.
