Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has revealed that he never desired to become Nigeria’s Head of State, stating that leadership was thrust upon him during one of the country’s most difficult periods.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, where he reflected on the events that led to his emergence as military leader in 1966 following the counter-coup that altered Nigeria’s political landscape.

According to the former military ruler, he initially saw himself as a young officer focused on national service and had no ambition of occupying the nation’s highest office at the time.

Gowon also recounted some of the major challenges faced during his administration, including the Nigerian Civil War, efforts at national unity, and post-war reconciliation initiatives.

The memoir offers insights into key moments in Nigeria’s history, as well as Gowon’s personal reflections on leadership, governance, and national development.
