The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has released excerpts from its Special National Convention held in Abuja on Friday, alleging political intimidation and disruption of its activities by government officials and security agencies.

In a statement issued by the party leadership under Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, the PDP said it had duly notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and relevant security agencies of its plans to hold the convention at the A Class Event Centre in Abuja.

The party alleged that the venue booking was unexpectedly cancelled following pressure and threats reportedly linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, including warnings about the revocation of the facility’s Certificate of Occupancy and possible demolition if the event proceeded.

It further claimed that heavy deployment of police operatives was recorded around the venue on the eve of the convention, blocking access roads and disrupting movement in the area.

Following the developments, the party said it convened an emergency meeting involving its Board of Trustees, National Working Committee, National Executive Committee, state chairmen, and other stakeholders to assess the situation.

According to the communiqué, party elders advised against confrontation with security agencies, urging members to remain calm and pursue political resolution through democratic means.

Despite the disruption, the PDP confirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan was unanimously affirmed as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election after a motion was moved and seconded during the convention.

The party said formal presentation and flag-off ceremonies would be announced at a later date.

The PDP strongly condemned what it described as the use of state power to intimidate opposition activities, warning that such actions could undermine democratic principles and heighten political tension in the country.

It also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and ensure de-escalation of political tensions, urging respect for democratic freedoms and the right of political parties to operate without interference.

The party urged its members nationwide to remain united and focused, expressing confidence that its challenges would be resolved through democratic processes.
