The Zamfara State Police Command has successfully rescued several travellers who were abducted by armed bandits along the Anka–Bukkuyum highway, following a fierce gun battle with the attackers.
According to security sources, the operation took place on Tuesday evening after police received intelligence on the movement of armed bandits operating along the route. A rapid response team was deployed to intercept the criminals.
During the encounter, a heavy exchange of gunfire broke out between the police and the bandits. The attackers were reportedly overwhelmed by the security forces and fled into nearby forest areas, abandoning their victims.
The rescued travellers were evacuated to safety and are currently receiving assistance, while efforts are underway to reunite them with their families.
Security officials also confirmed that several motorcycles used by the bandits were recovered at the scene.
Authorities say the latest operation highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen security along major highways in Zamfara State, which has remained one of the hotspots of bandit-related violence in north-west Nigeria.
Police say follow-up operations are continuing to track down the fleeing suspects and dismantle their networks. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
