Chelsea Football Club is mourning the death of its former chairman and owner, Ken Bates, who has died at the age of 94.

The club announced that Bates passed away peacefully in Monaco, surrounded by his wife and family. In a tribute, Chelsea described him as a key figure in the club’s history, praising his determination to guide the Blues through one of their most difficult periods.

Bates bought Chelsea for a symbolic £1 in 1982 when the club was facing serious financial challenges. During his 21-year tenure, he oversaw the redevelopment of Stamford Bridge and helped restore Chelsea’s status in English football. Under his leadership, the club won the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

In 2003, Bates sold Chelsea to Roman Abramovich in a deal reportedly worth £140 million, paving the way for one of the most successful eras in the club’s history.

He later served as chairman of Leeds United before leaving the club in 2012.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across the football community, with many recognising Bates’ lasting contribution to Chelsea and English football. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
