Abdulmumin Jibrin Defends Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills

National Assembly member Abdulmumin Jibrin has confidently endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills, despite widespread debate and resistance, particularly from the northern regions and the National Executive Council (NEC). Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Jibrin, who represents the Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency of Kano State, refuted claims that the bills are “dead on arrival” and assured that they will successfully pass through the National Assembly.

Jibrin argued that opposition within the North is not unanimous, countering assertions made by Senator Ali Ndume, who declared the bills “dead on arrival.” He emphasized that the National Assembly would follow due legislative process, ultimately ensuring a thorough review and potential passage of the bills, which he described as beneficial and long overdue.

“It is not a consensus in the North that this bill should be shut down,” Jibrin affirmed. “I can confidently tell you that the bill will go through the processes in the National Assembly and it will be passed.”

President Tinubu, in a statement from his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, echoed Jibrin’s sentiments, expressing support for legislative review rather than withdrawal. Tinubu acknowledged the NEC’s recommendation but stressed the importance of further stakeholder engagement and consultation within the ongoing legislative process.

“President Tinubu welcomes further consultations and engagement with key stakeholders to address any reservations about the bills,” the statement read.

As debates intensify, the ultimate decision on the bills will shape Nigeria’s approach to economic reforms and fiscal policy, impacting the business climate and economic productivity.
