Harry Kane has expressed disappointment over the high number of withdrawals from the England squad this week, stressing that playing for the national team should come first.
The Euro 2024 runners-up are set to face Greece in a crucial Nations League match on Thursday, followed by a home encounter with Ireland at Wembley on Sunday. However, interim manager Lee Carsley’s final camp before Thomas Tuchel takes over has been disrupted by a staggering eight pull-outs.
Kane, who will captain the side in Athens, admitted he was frustrated by the absences, especially given the importance of Thursday’s match, which is crucial for England’s hopes of automatic promotion.
Asked about the legacy left by former manager Gareth Southgate, the Bayern Munich striker told ITV: “I think it’s the joy of playing for England. He really brought that back. Every camp, players were excited to come, and everyone wanted to play. That’s the most important thing.
“England comes before anything—before any club. It’s a shame to see so many players pull out.”
Kane acknowledged the challenges of the current season but added: “It’s tough, but I don’t really like it if I’m honest. England should always come first.”
A total of eight players withdrew from Carsley’s original 26-man squad, including Declan Rice, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, and Cole Palmer. Jarrad Branthwaite was among those called up to replace the absentees, but he too did not travel to Greece, with Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah stepping in.
Despite the setbacks, Carsley emphasized the importance of focusing on the players available.
“The focus has been on the players who are here,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for others to step up. We’re looking forward to the game and making the most of this situation.”
Carsley, who will return to his role with the England Under-21s after this international window, downplayed Kane’s comments, pointing out that player withdrawals are not uncommon in November.
“I think it’s Harry’s opinion,” Carsley said. “I can only manage what’s in front of me. November has always been a tough window for pull-outs. The players who are here fully deserve to be here and are ready for the game.
“We’ve got players coming in who are excited for the opportunity. The focus is on those who are here, not those who aren’t.”
