President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the Nigerian Tribune for its exceptional contributions to journalism, democracy, and nation-building as the iconic newspaper celebrates its 75th anniversary.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu lauded the newspaper’s unwavering commitment to promoting democracy, social justice, and press freedom. The President described the Tribune as “The Great Survivor,” recognizing its resilience in the face of challenges and its steadfast dedication to the vision of its founders, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his wife, Hannah Dideolu Awolowo.
Established on November 16, 1949, by Chief Awolowo, Nigeria’s first Premier of the Western Region, the Nigerian Tribune has grown to become one of the country’s most respected media outlets. Tinubu highlighted its role in fostering constructive nationalism and upholding the rights of Nigerians across all social, economic, and political strata.
“The Nigerian Tribune has consistently championed constructive nationalism and upheld the rights of all Nigerians, regardless of their economic, social, or political backgrounds,” Tinubu stated.
The President also acknowledged the contributions of veteran journalists who shaped the newspaper’s legacy, including Alhaji Lateef Jakande, Ayo Ojewunmi (widely known as Pen Atalanta), Chief Tola Adeniyi, Biodun Oduwole, and Folu Olamiti. Their efforts, Tinubu said, have solidified the Tribune’s reputation as a cornerstone of Nigerian journalism.
Tinubu emphasized the importance of credible and ethical journalism in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape, particularly amid the rise of internet-based “citizen journalism.” He praised the Nigerian Tribune for providing factual, balanced reporting that prioritizes national unity and social harmony.
“Reputable publications like the Nigerian Tribune provide the public with information grounded in facts and a commitment to social harmony,” Tinubu remarked.
The President expressed hope that the newspaper’s anniversary celebrations would not only honor its legacy but also set the stage for its continued relevance in the dynamic media environment.
Over its 75-year history, the Nigerian Tribune has stood firm against attempts to suppress its voice, earning a reputation as a bastion of truth and integrity. As it charts a path forward, Tinubu encouraged the publication to remain steadfast in its mission of delivering impactful journalism that upholds democratic principles and contributes to national progress.
The Nigerian Tribune marked its anniversary with a renewed commitment to fearless and ethical journalism, solidifying its role as a trusted watchdog and defender of democratic ideals.
