
President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the 19th Heads of State and Government Summit of the Group of 20 (G20). The President landed on Sunday at 11:03 p.m. local time (3:03 a.m. Nigerian time) and was received by Ambassador Breno Costa from Brazil’s Ministry of External Relations.
Accompanying the President are key Nigerian officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha; Minister of Art, Tourism, Culture, and Creativity, Hannatu Musawa; Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi; and Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Amb. Mohammed Mohammed.
The summit, hosted by Brazilian President Lula da Silva, will focus on global challenges under the theme “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” with discussions spanning economic, social, and environmental dimensions, as well as the reform of global governance. Notable topics include rising global temperatures, the digital economy, and the Israel-Hamas conflict.
As part of his participation, President Tinubu is expected to engage in bilateral meetings to advance Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms. The summit, taking place from November 18 to 19, will include leaders from 19 member countries and invitees such as representatives from the African Union and the European Union.
President da Silva has prioritized combating hunger, poverty, and inequality, with food security being a central theme of Brazil’s G20 presidency, aiming to eliminate extreme poverty by 2030.
