Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian government has officially lifted the ban on mining exploration in Zamfara State, ending over five years of restrictions. Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, announced the decision, attributing it to significant improvements in the security situation in the region.

“This marks a turning point for Zamfara State and the nation at large,” Alake stated. “The state’s vast mineral wealth, including gold, lithium, and copper, has the potential to significantly boost our national economy.”
The ban, initially imposed to curb illegal mining and its links to banditry, had unintended consequences, including enabling unauthorized miners to exploit the state’s resources. With the restrictions lifted, the government aims to regulate mining operations more effectively, ensuring that the sector contributes meaningfully to national revenue.

Alake also highlighted plans for policy reforms in 2025 to revitalize the mining industry. “Our goal is to consolidate reforms, create a favorable investment environment, and achieve sustainable growth in the mining sector,” he said.
The announcement has sparked optimism among stakeholders, who see it as a major step toward harnessing the state’s mineral resources to fuel Nigeria’s economic development.
