The death toll from the tragic stampede at a rice distribution event in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State, has risen to 22, according to local authorities. The stampede, which occurred on Saturday, December 21, 2024, during a charity event organized by the Obijackson Foundation, has left the nation in mourning.
Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the figures on Sunday. “The commissioner of police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, visited the hospital where the victims are receiving treatment and regrettably stated that twenty-two people lost their lives. The CP commiserates with family and friends of the deceased and wishes the injured a quick recovery,” Ikenga said.
The event, held at Amaranta Stadium in Okija, was intended to support the community with food supplies but ended in chaos, underscoring challenges in crowd management during large-scale distributions.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed his sorrow over the tragedies, urging better crowd management. “It is imperative that those entrusted with the organization of such large-scale events take the utmost care in crowd management, prioritizing the safety and well-being of all participants,” Atiku wrote on his X handle.

Labour Party presidential candidate and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, highlighted the incidents as symptoms of Nigeria’s worsening economic challenges. “These tragedies reflect the systemic failures that plague our society,” Obi wrote on X. “The desperate quest for survival in these harsh economic times has driven our people to extremes in their search for food, often at the cost of their lives.”
