Report Forecasts Nigeria’s Population to Exceed 237 Million by 2025

According to the latest United Nations data estimated by Worldometer, Nigeria’s population is projected to reach 237,527,782 by 2025. This marks an increase from 235,072,214 recorded in December 2024.

The report indicates that Nigeria’s population grew by 4,796,533 between 2023 and 2024.

In comparison, the U.S. Census Bureau’s estimates, released on Monday, show that the world population increased by over 71 million people in 2024, slightly slower than the 75 million increase seen in 2023.

Worldometer’s data shows that Nigeria’s population now accounts for 2.85% of the global population, ranking the country sixth in the world by population size.

The report also highlights the most populated cities in Nigeria: Lagos (15,388,000), Kano (4,910,000), Ibadan (3,649,000), Abuja (2,690,000), and Port Harcourt (2,120,000). In 2024, 53.9% of Nigeria’s population (125,447,884 people) is expected to live in urban areas.

Nigeria’s population density is 255 people per square kilometer (662 per square mile), and the country has a total land area of 910,770 square kilometers (351,650 square miles).

The median age in Nigeria is 17.9 years, with an average life expectancy at birth of 54.6 years for both sexes. Females have a life expectancy of 54.9 years, while males have a life expectancy of 54.3 years.

The data further projects that the global population will reach 8.09 billion on January 1, 2025.
