The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has screened three presidential aspirants ahead of its presidential primary scheduled for May 25.
The aspirants screened by the party’s Presidential Screening Committee at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja on Wednesday were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, economist and former banker Muhammed Hayatu-Deen, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
The three contenders are expected to compete for the party’s presidential ticket during the primary election later this month.
Sources within the party revealed that ADC leaders are currently engaging in consultations with the aspirants in an effort to reach a consensus arrangement and avoid the cost and logistics involved in conducting direct primaries.
Speaking on the development, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the party had not yet decided on the mode of primary election to adopt.
According to a party source, discussions are ongoing between the leadership and the aspirants to ensure a smooth resolution ahead of the May 25 exercise.
The source added that the party may resort to direct primaries if all parties fail to reach a compromise.
