The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the final forfeiture of 48 properties linked to former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, to the Federal Government.

The order was granted by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court, Abuja, who held that the EFCC had established that the properties were reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities and were not acquired through legitimate sources of income.

Among the assets forfeited are Rayhaan University in Kebbi State, its permanent and temporary campuses, the Vice Chancellor’s residence, Rayhaan Radio, hotels, commercial plazas, residential buildings, agricultural facilities, factories, warehouses, filling stations and several parcels of land located across Abuja, Kebbi and Kano States.

The court also ordered the forfeiture of Rayhaan Agro Allied Factory, Azbir Hotel and other business assets, as well as Zeennoor Hotel in Kano and several other commercial properties.

The case followed an interim forfeiture order granted in January 2026, after which the EFCC published notices inviting interested parties to show cause why the assets should not be permanently forfeited.

Malami and 14 other respondents, including family members and associates, challenged the interim order, questioned the court’s jurisdiction and sought to prevent the final forfeiture.

In its judgment, the court held that the respondents failed to provide sufficient evidence to establish that the properties were acquired through lawful sources of income, adding that mere claims of ownership were insufficient in non-conviction-based forfeiture proceedings.

The ruling marks one of the largest asset forfeiture decisions secured by the EFCC in recent years.
