The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved ₦83.2 billion for the Anticipatory Action Task Force (AATF) as part of efforts to proactively address flooding and other climate-related emergencies across Nigeria.

The approval followed a presentation by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, on the need for early intervention measures to mitigate the impact of flooding, particularly during the rainy season.

Speaking at the 158th NEC meeting, Vice President Kashim Shettima said the administration’s reform agenda must translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians, stressing that government policies should improve the lives of farmers, manufacturers, vulnerable citizens, unemployed youths and future generations.

Shettima noted that the country’s focus remains on moving from economic stabilisation to increased production, implementation of key reforms and coordinated national growth. He urged state governments to work closely with the Federal Government to remove barriers affecting exports and improve access to international markets for Nigerian products.

The Vice President also highlighted the importance of building a complete value chain that links agriculture, manufacturing, standards, ports and global markets, warning that Nigeria cannot continue to rely on exporting raw materials while importing finished products.

The approval of the intervention fund comes amid growing concerns over climate-related disasters and the need for stronger preparedness measures to protect lives, livelihoods and critical infrastructure across the country.
