The Presidency has dismissed as false a viral report alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is planning constitutional changes that would alter Nigeria’s name to the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the northern region.
According to the statement, the claims being circulated online and attributed to unnamed sources are part of a coordinated attempt by certain political actors to mislead the public, create tension, and destabilise the country ahead of the general elections.
The Presidency urged Nigerians to disregard the report entirely, describing it as fake news promoted by individuals seeking to cause disaffection and political unrest.
It also clarified that there is no proposal before the Federal Government or the National Assembly tagged “Project True Federation,” nor any plan to submit such a bill by December 15.
Reiterating the constitutional process, the statement noted that any amendment to Nigeria’s constitution requires extensive legislative scrutiny, including approval by a two-thirds majority of both chambers of the National Assembly and the endorsement of at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.
The Presidency stressed that President Tinubu remains focused on economic reforms aimed at improving national development and delivering tangible benefits to Nigerians.
It added that citizens should be cautious of misinformation and politically motivated narratives expected to increase as the country approaches the 2026 general elections.
