President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will deliver a Joint Address to the National Assembly on June 12, 2026, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day celebration, according to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

The announcement was made by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee responsible for coordinating the national celebration. The SGF said the presidential address would be one of the major highlights of the programme approved for the commemoration.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja, Akume described Democracy Day as an important occasion to honour Nigerians who sacrificed for the restoration of democratic governance. He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle, particularly the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose contributions remain central to Nigeria’s democratic history.

The SGF noted that the celebration provides an opportunity for the Federal Government to highlight progress made in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national development. He urged members of the committee to begin preparations immediately, stressing that this year’s activities would reflect the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline while maintaining the significance of the national event.

Other activities lined up for the Democracy Day celebration include a World Press Conference on June 4, Special Juma’at Prayers on June 5, an Inter-denominational Church Service on June 7, a Democracy Day Public Lecture on June 9, Youth and Women-Oriented Programmes on June 10, a Presidential Broadcast on June 12, and a Democracy Day Gala Night later that same day.
