Roberto Martinez has stepped down as head coach of the Portugal national football team following the country’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Martinez announced his departure after Portugal suffered a 1–0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16, bringing an end to their World Cup campaign. He described the decision as the conclusion of a cycle, stating that his primary objective had been to win the World Cup.
The Spanish coach, who took charge of Portugal in 2023 after leaving Belgium, confirmed that he would not continue in the role after the expiration of his contract.
Martinez expressed gratitude to the Portuguese people, players, and football authorities for their support during his tenure, describing it as an honour to lead the national team.
Despite the early exit, he defended his team’s performances, insisting that Portugal did not fail but were eliminated by one of the tournament’s strongest sides in a closely contested match.
The Portuguese Football Federation is now expected to begin the process of appointing a new head coach ahead of future international competitions.
