The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has announced its decision to boycott the local government elections scheduled for January 18, citing concerns over the credibility and impartiality of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC).

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Thursday by the PDP Director of Media and Publicity in the state, Leye Igbabo, following extensive consultations with party stakeholders and leaders.

“This decision is the result of thorough consultations with party leaders, stakeholders, and the national secretariat of our great party,” the statement read.

The PDP revealed that it had initially fielded 15 chairmanship candidates across 15 local government areas and 131 councillorship candidates. However, the party expressed serious doubts about ODIEC’s ability to conduct a free, fair, and transparent election.

“Recent observations and reports highlight a troubling pattern of double standards by ODIEC, raising serious doubts about its credibility and impartiality,” Igbabo said. “ODIEC has failed the integrity test, and we cannot, in good conscience, legitimize a compromised process by participating in the election.”

Commitment to Electoral Integrity

The PDP emphasized that its decision to withdraw aligns with its commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process and promoting credible elections in Ondo State.

“Our withdrawal is a principled stand to maintain the integrity of our party and our belief in transparent electoral practices,” the statement added.

Other Parties Proceeding

ODIEC had previously screened 13 political parties, including the PDP, for participation in the council polls. With the PDP’s withdrawal, 12 parties are now expected to take part in the elections.

The PDP reaffirmed its dedication to improving the electoral process in Ondo State, stating its readiness to engage in credible elections in the future.
