Afenifere Leader Ayo Adebanjo Passes Away at 96 in Lagos

Ayo Adebanjo, a veteran politician, nationalist, and prominent leader of the Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere, has passed away at the age of 96.

According to a statement from his family, Mr. Adebanjo died peacefully on Friday morning at his residence in Lagos. A well-respected figure in Nigerian politics, Adebanjo was known for his unwavering advocacy for democracy, restructuring, and good governance. Over the years, he played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape, championing progressive ideals and the interests of the Yoruba people. Born in 1928, Adebanjo was a close associate of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and played a significant role in the Action Group and later the Afenifere movement. He remained a vocal critic of successive governments and a steadfast advocate for true federalism in Nigeria.

Following the announcement of his passing, tributes have poured in from across the country. Political leaders, traditional rulers, and civil society groups have expressed their condolences, highlighting his contributions to Nigeria’s political development.

Peter Obi, former presidential candidate, described Adebanjo as “a fearless leader who dedicated his life to justice and equity.” Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, hailed him as “a beacon of wisdom and a pillar of Yoruba unity.”Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State also expressed his sorrow, stating, “Nigeria has lost a statesman who tirelessly fought for democracy and the rights of the people.” A Legacy of Advocacy and LeadershipAdebanjo remained active in political discourse until his final days, consistently calling for constitutional reforms and a more equitable governance structure in Nigeria.
