The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed the arrest of 14 suspects linked to the mob killing of travelers along the Uromi-Obajana Road in Edo State.

In an official statement, Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi revealed that Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun strongly condemned the violent attack, which was carried out by a local vigilante group. The group allegedly targeted the travelers on suspicion of being kidnappers.

The victims, who were traveling in a truck, identified themselves as hunters. However, they were found in possession of 19 locally fabricated firearms. The vigilantes, unconvinced by their explanation, accused them of being criminals and subjected them to mob justice, leading to tragic consequences.

Swift Police Response and Ongoing Investigation

Following the incident, the Edo State Police Command swiftly deployed officers to restore order in the affected community. So far, 14 suspects have been arrested, and a manhunt is ongoing for others involved in the attack.

To ensure a transparent and thorough investigation, IGP Egbetokun has directed DIG Sadiq Abubakar of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) to take over the case. The police chief reassured the public that all those responsible would be brought to justice.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to upholding the rule of law and will not tolerate any form of unlawful killings or extrajudicial actions under any guise,” the statement read.

Call for Calm and Warning Against Jungle Justice

The IGP has urged citizens to remain calm and allow law enforcement agencies to conduct a professional investigation. He also issued a stern warning against jungle justice, emphasizing that unlawful possession of firearms remains a serious criminal offense under Nigerian law.

Additionally, the police have urged individuals in possession of unlicensed firearms to surrender them at the nearest police station or follow the proper licensing procedures.

The NPF reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all perpetrators of the mob attack face the full weight of the law.
