Peter Obi Accuses Unknown Forces of Illegally Demolishing Brother’s Property in Lagos

In a shocking turn of events, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has accused unidentified individuals of unlawfully demolishing a property owned by his younger brother’s company in Ikeja, Lagos. Obi took to his verified X handle on Tuesday, sharing the distressing details of the incident, which he claims occurred without any legal authorization.

The property, which had stood for over 15 years, was reportedly brought down in a demolition orchestrated by individuals claiming to act on a court order. However, Obi argues that the judgment referenced in the demolition lacked the necessary details to validate the action. The alleged court order did not specify the property, the parties involved, or include any directive for demolition.

“I was informed by my youngest brother, who had just returned from Port Harcourt, that a group had invaded his company’s property and was demolishing the building,” Obi shared in his post. “Security guards on the premises denied him entry and told him that the building was being torn down.”

Obi, who quickly flew in from Abuja to assess the situation firsthand, was reportedly barred from accessing the site. He claims that when he arrived, he was told that the demolition was being carried out pursuant to a vague court order, which he says had no clear reference to the property or the individuals involved.

“How do you sue an unknown person? How does a court issue a judgment in such a farce of a case?” Obi remarked, expressing his frustration over the lack of clarity in the court order. “No one was served, and no names were written. Yet, excavators appeared, and they began tearing down a structure that had stood for over 15 years.”

As the hours passed, Obi remained at the site, waiting for clarification. “I stood there from 10 am to 2 pm, waiting to get a call from whoever ordered the demolition. No one came. The contractor didn’t even know who sent him,” he said, lamenting what he described as “coordinated lawlessness” in Nigeria. “The whole situation screamed of coordinated lawlessness and impunity.”

Obi further emphasized the broader implications of the incident, pointing to the impact on business and investment in Nigeria. He shared that, during a recent conversation, an investor had opted not to invest in the country due to its reputation for lawlessness.

“This is not about me or my brother—it’s about what ordinary Nigerians go through every day. If this can happen to someone with a registered company and legitimate ownership, what hope does the average citizen have?” Obi remarked.

The former governor reiterated his commitment to a vision of a new Nigeria, one in which the rule of law and the protection of civil rights would be guaranteed. “I remain committed to building a new Nigeria, where lawlessness will be a thing of the past, and the protection of life, property, and civil rights are guaranteed.”

As of press time, no government agency had claimed responsibility for the demolition, and no official explanation had been provided.
