Akume Remains SGF, Says Presidency

The Presidency on Saturday night reaffirmed that George Akume, former Benue State Governor, remains the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), amid speculations about a possible replacement.

Recent reports had claimed that Akume resigned as SGF to take up the role of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga debunked the rumours, saying:

“There has been no change in the status of Akume.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, currently in Saint Lucia, has not made any new appointments.

The information circulating about Akume’s replacement is untrue.”

The clarification followed the recent resignation of Abdullahi Ganduje, former Kano State Governor, who stepped down as APC National Chairman on Friday, June 27, 2025. His resignation allowed Ali Bukar Dalori, the party’s Deputy National Chairman (North), to assume the role of Acting National Chairman.
