President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on his unanimous re-election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council.
Adeniyi secured a second term during the organisation’s 147th and 148th Council Sessions held in Brussels, Belgium.
President Tinubu described the re-election as a strong endorsement of Adeniyi’s leadership and a reflection of Nigeria’s growing influence in global customs administration.
The President noted that his recent approval of Adeniyi’s tenure extension as Comptroller-General of Customs was based on the need to sustain the ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Customs Service.
Tinubu highlighted the progress recorded under Adeniyi’s leadership, including improvements in revenue generation, trade facilitation, anti-smuggling operations, border management, stakeholder engagement, and technology-driven reforms.
He specifically commended the implementation of the B’Odogwu customs clearance platform, describing it as a significant innovation that has enhanced transparency, operational efficiency, and cargo clearance processes while reducing dependence on foreign systems.
The President also praised the Service’s adoption of the Authorised Economic Operator Programme, expansion of non-intrusive inspection technologies, strengthened inter-agency collaboration, and alignment with international customs standards.
According to Tinubu, Adeniyi’s re-election is both a personal achievement and a recognition of Nigeria’s increasing relevance in international customs affairs.
He expressed confidence that Adeniyi’s second term at the helm of the WCO Council would further strengthen global customs cooperation, promote secure and efficient trade, and enhance Nigeria’s international reputation.
The President wished the Customs chief continued success in his global responsibilities and in driving the ongoing transformation of the Nigeria Customs Service.
