The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will unveil a brand-new trophy for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, just days before the tournament kicks off in Morocco.

CAF announced the upcoming launch on Sunday, highlighting it as part of President Dr. Patrice Motsepe’s broader vision to elevate women’s football across the continent.

“The new TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Trophy will be launched on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 in Morocco, the host nation for this year’s event,” the official statement read.

The digital unveiling will take place in the afternoon via CAF’s online platforms, followed by an activation event with the tournament’s title sponsor, TotalEnergies, later that evening.

This year’s tournament, scheduled from July 5 to 26, comes with a significant boost in prize money — increasing from $975,000 in the previous edition to $2.4 million, reflecting CAF’s commitment to investing in the women’s game.

Group Stage Highlights

Host nation Morocco headline Group A alongside Zambia, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Eleven-time champions Nigeria are drawn in Group B with Botswana, Tunisia, and Algeria. Defending champions South Africa lead Group C, facing Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania.

The tournament opener will see Morocco take on Zambia at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

A Legacy of Growth and Competition

WAFCON has grown remarkably since its inception. Originally a home-and-away qualification format, the competition was restructured in 1998 into a biennial tournament and rebranded in 2016 under its current name.

Nigeria remains the dominant force, winning nine of the 12 full-scale editions and never failing to reach at least the semi-finals. Equatorial Guinea triumphed as hosts in 2008 and 2012, while South Africa claimed their first title in 2022.

Only Morocco, Ghana, and Cameroon have reached the final without yet lifting the trophy, underscoring the increasing competitiveness of women’s football in Africa.

As anticipation builds for WAFCON 2025, the new trophy symbolizes a new chapter for the women’s game on the continent — one marked by investment, recognition, and growing global attention.
