The Benue State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation and manhunt for the gunmen responsible for the killing of the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Benue State, Ardo Risku Muhammad. The development has sparked renewed concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of the state, where recurring attacks have continued to threaten lives, property, and economic activities.
Police authorities confirmed that tactical and intelligence units have been mobilised to identify, track, and apprehend those behind the attack. According to the command, security personnel have intensified surveillance operations in affected communities while investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing.
The state Police Public Relations Officer assured residents that every available resource is being deployed to ensure the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted.
He also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible and timely information that could assist ongoing investigations.
Ardo Risku Muhammad, who served as the Benue State Chairman of MACBAN, was reportedly attacked and killed by unidentified gunmen in what authorities have described as a serious security incident. The attack has sent shockwaves through the pastoralist community and raised fears of possible reprisals if those responsible are not swiftly brought to justice.
Although the motive behind the killing has yet to be officially established, investigators are examining all possible angles. Security agencies have not ruled out criminal activity, targeted violence, or links to the wider insecurity that has plagued several parts of Benue State in recent years.
Benue has witnessed repeated violent incidents involving armed groups, communal clashes, and attacks on farming and pastoral communities. These incidents have resulted in significant loss of lives, displacement of thousands of residents, and destruction of farmlands and other means of livelihood. The killing of the MACBAN chairman is expected to further heighten tensions in a state already grappling with persistent security challenges.
In response to the incident, police have increased patrols and strengthened security presence in vulnerable communities to prevent any breakdown of law and order. Authorities said they are working closely with other security agencies and local stakeholders to ensure that the situation does not escalate.
The police stressed that investigations remain active and urged residents to avoid spreading rumours or unverified information capable of creating panic.
Instead, citizens were encouraged to report suspicious movements or individuals through established security channels to support efforts aimed at restoring peace.
Community leaders and residents have also appealed for calm, urging all parties to allow security agencies to carry out their investigations without interference. They expressed hope that those responsible for the killing would be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The death of Muhammad has drawn attention to the need for stronger security measures and sustained dialogue among communities to address the underlying causes of recurring violence in the state.
Observers believe that improved intelligence gathering, effective law enforcement, and community cooperation will be essential in preventing further attacks.
As investigations continue, the Benue State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state. The command assured the public that no effort would be spared in tracking down the suspects and ensuring they face justice.
Authorities further appealed to residents to remain vigilant, support security operations, and refrain from taking the law into their own hands. They maintained that maintaining peace and stability requires the collective efforts of security agencies, community leaders, and the general public.
The manhunt for the assailants remains ongoing, with police expressing confidence that sustained intelligence-driven operations will lead to the arrest of those responsible for the killing of the Benue MACBAN chairman and help reinforce public confidence in the state’s security response.
