The Federal Government has initiated talks with global financial institutions to secure over $60 million in climate finance to develop pilot green energy hubs across Nigeria. Among the projects is a pioneering hybrid energy facility at a major Nigerian airport, which is expected to serve as a benchmark for clean, affordable, and digitally monitored energy use across public infrastructure. This initiative was unveiled by Vice President Kashim Shettima during the opening of the Decarbonising Infrastructure in Nigeria Summit, held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. The summit brought together stakeholders to unlock climate finance for sustainable development in the country.

Vice President Shettima emphasized the urgency of climate action, stating that Nigeria must transition decisively to a low-carbon economy. He warned that inaction in the face of worsening climate challenges would jeopardize the country’s development aspirations and economic future. “Climate action is not just about the environment; it is an economic necessity,” he said, noting that over 75% of Nigeria’s greenhouse gas emissions stem from infrastructure-related sectors like energy, transportation, agriculture, and urban development—pillars of the nation’s economy.

The Vice President also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to an inclusive and urgent green transition. He highlighted several federal initiatives, including the State Innovation Challenge Park, regional climate engagement clinics, and a new white paper on green growth financing. Shettima called for policy alignment across all levels of government and stressed the need for innovative funding mechanisms such as green bonds and climate investment funds. “Our goal is net-zero, but our journey must be local, inclusive, and urgent. The time for bullet points is over. The time for bold action is now,” he declared.
