I have received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of one of Nigeria’s most revered and distinguished traditional rulers His Royal Majesty Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona the Awujale of Ijebuland who has joined his ancestors after an extraordinary reign spanning more than 65 years.
This profoundly painful news came to me on Sunday night and was made even more difficult to bear as it coincided with the loss of my immediate predecessor in office President Muhammadu Buhari. The passing of Oba Adetona marks the end of an era leaving a significant void in the traditional institution of Yorubaland and in the soul of our nation.
Oba Adetona was an iconic monarch an exemplary custodian of culture and tradition who carried out his duties with dignity elegance and unwavering commitment. From the moment he ascended the throne at the age of 26 he led Ijebuland with wisdom discipline and a relentless pursuit of progress.
Throughout his remarkable reign Ijebuland witnessed unprecedented transformation. His Majesty provided principled and visionary leadership using his influence to promote unity development and responsible governance. In times of national uncertainty he emerged consistently as a voice of reason and moral authority.
I was privileged to share a warm and respectful relationship with Kabiyesi. I will always hold dear the moments we shared. He was a trusted confidant a sincere advisor and a symbol of noble leadership. His wisdom was enriching his honesty refreshing and his counsel deeply empowering.
Oba Adetona’s enduring legacy is evident not only in his decades of devoted service to his people but also in his philanthropic investments in education and good governance. His founding of the School of Postgraduate and Research Studies in Governance at Olabisi Onabanjo University Ago Iwoye stands as a living monument to his vision and impact.
As the nation mourns this monumental loss I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Adetona family to Governor Dapo Abiodun the government and people of Ogun State and to the sons and daughters of Ijebuland at home and abroad.
May the soul of our beloved Kabiyesi rest in eternal peace and may his remarkable life of service continue to inspire current and future generations.
