The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reaffirmed its dominance in Lagos politics by sweeping all 20 chairmanship seats in the just-concluded local government elections across the state. The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) confirmed on Sunday that the ruling party also secured 375 out of 376 councillorship positions, leaving a single seat for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ward D, Yaba.
Saturday’s elections saw registered voters in Lagos head to the polls to choose leaders who will oversee the affairs of the state’s 20 local government areas (LGAs) and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs). According to LASIEC, 15 political parties participated in the elections out of the 19 registered nationwide.

Despite concerns raised over voter turnout, LASIEC Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, explained that the swift voting process might have contributed to the perception of apathy. “It didn’t take some voters more than five minutes to cast their votes, so people may have left quickly, giving the impression of low turnout,” she said.
While no major incidents of violence were recorded, there were reports of voter intimidation and logistical delays in some areas. Okikiolu-Ighile admitted that some polling units in remote locations were initially hard to reach, but materials were eventually delivered, and voting took place as scheduled.
The APC’s clean sweep consolidates its grip on Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital and the home state of President Bola Tinubu, who governed the state from 1999 to 2007. With over seven million registered voters, the outcome further strengthens the party’s influence in the state’s grassroots politics.
