Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, former Presidential candidate, has rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring that the party is ready for a significant return to power in 2027.

During a high-profile meeting with the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) at the party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters in Abuja, Dr. Hashim emphasized that despite the challenges, defections, and internal divisions faced by the PDP over the years, the party remains Nigeria’s most viable and national political platform.

“The PDP was built as a national platform from the start. Since 1998, we have had a significant presence in virtually every polling unit across the country. This legacy remains intact, and it is this national spread that makes PDP the only credible alternative to the APC,” he stated.

Dr. Hashim dismissed concerns regarding the party’s diminishing influence, asserting that the PDP’s grassroots support is still robust. He pointed out that many defections were driven by political pressure and blackmail, rather than genuine shifts in loyalty.

“Don’t be discouraged by those who have left. The real strength of any party lies not in a few powerful individuals but in the masses, and the people remain with the PDP,” he added.

He also commended Ambassador Umar Damagun, the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, for his exemplary leadership during turbulent times. According to Hashim, Damagun’s steady hand had kept the party united when many sought to divide it.

“The wisdom and calm with which Damagun has held the reins of this party is commendable. He has kept the house standing when others wanted to tear it apart,” Hashim said.

Looking ahead to the 2027 presidential elections, Dr. Hashim urged the party to present a visionary and credible candidate who can address national security challenges, revive the economy, and champion social justice. He called for unity within the party, stating that only through discipline and cohesion could the PDP hope to succeed in the upcoming elections.

“Nigerians are yearning for a new kind of leadership. The PDP must offer that hope. With unity, discipline, and courage, the PDP will not just win elections but rebuild Nigeria,” Hashim declared.

Earlier in the day, Dr. Hashim, who was the PDP’s first elected Deputy National Publicity Secretary, attended a gathering of the party’s founding members at the NAF Centre in Kado, Abuja.

As the countdown to the 2027 elections begins, the PDP is now focused on restoring its position as a leading political force in Nigeria.
