The family of late Nigerian football legend Peter Rufai has announced that the former Super Eagles goalkeeper will be laid to rest on August 22. The Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) has urged the Lagos State Government, the National Sports Commission, and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to accord him state honours befitting his remarkable service to the nation. PFAN described Rufai as a “patriotic, dedicated, and totally committed servant” who deserved a carnival-like farewell from the people of Nigeria.

During a condolence visit to the Rufai family home in Amuwo Odofin Estate, Lagos, on July 30, a PFAN delegation comprising ex-internationals and officials, including Clement Temile, Taju Disu, and Princewill Gbogbodu, expressed their solidarity. The team was led by Tajudeen Ajide, who assured the family of support from the Lagos State Government and expressed confidence that the Federal Government and NFF would also stand by them. The family, represented by Dele Rufai, thanked PFAN for the visit, describing it as timely and deeply comforting.

PFAN is coordinating with the Lagos Sports Commission and the Lagos State Football Association to organise a Valedictory Football Match on August 22 in honour of Rufai. The event, expected to take place at Teslim Balogun Stadium or Onikan Stadium, will feature all registered football clubs and academies in Lagos State dressed in their official kits. All Stars International Football Clubs divisions in Lagos will also participate. Rufai, who passed away recently, remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated goalkeepers, remembered for his outstanding contributions to the national team and the pride he brought to Nigerian football.
