Lagos to Divert Traffic on Osborne Road, Ikoyi, for Drainage Works, August 15–17

The Lagos State Government will divert traffic on Osborne Road in Ikoyi from Friday, August 15, to Sunday, August 17, to allow drainage connection works that officials say will reduce flooding in the area.

According to the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the project will link newly constructed drains along Modupe Alakija Crescent to the underground drainage system beneath Osborne Road’s median. The work requires building a cross culvert and cutting through a section of the road before Foreshore Towers.

“In line with efforts to improve the drainage system on Modupe Alakija Crescent and its environs, there is a need to connect the newly constructed drains, via a cross culvert, to the underground channel beneath the median along Osborne Road,” Osiyemi said in a statement, citing a report by the News Agency of Nigeria.

Construction will begin at 10 p.m. on August 15 and is expected to conclude by midnight on August 17. The road is scheduled to reopen fully on Monday, August 18.

Traffic Management and Alternative Routes
To ease movement during the Osborne Road closure, a counterflow arrangement will be set up along Osborne/Alfred Rewane Road, covering roughly 100 meters from Modupe Alakija Crescent to the Alfred Rewane junction. Motorists heading toward Osborne Road from Alfred Rewane will be directed into a contraflow lane before merging back into their normal route, while inbound traffic will be limited to a single lane.

The state has advised alternative routes:

  • From Osborne Road to Alfred Rewane Road: use Oba Adeyemi Oyekan Avenue to connect to Glover Road, Lugard Avenue, or Cameron Road.
  • From Alfred Rewane Road to Osborne Road: take Glover Road, Lugard Avenue, or Cameron Road to reach Oba Adeyemi Oyekan Avenue.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will supervise road use during the diversion period. Officials say the drainage upgrade will enhance stormwater management, reduce the risk of flooding, and improve driving conditions for Ikoyi residents.
