The Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) has held its maiden Postharvest Loss Reduction Summer Class in Lagos, training 50 students in food preservation, processing, and agribusiness.
The programme, tagged Catch Them Young Initiative, ran from August 4 to 21, 2025, and featured hands-on sessions where students processed produce into pineapple rings, pawpaw flakes, and fish snacks.
NSPRI Executive Director, Prof. Lateef Sanni, said the initiative was aimed at exposing youths to innovation and practical skills. Lagos Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Shuaeeb Oyewole, added that it would boost food security and nurture future agripreneurs.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abimbola Olusanya, who delivered the keynote, noted that Nigeria loses up to 50% of its produce postharvest, stressing the need for preservation skills.
Certificates, awards, and cash prizes were presented to outstanding participants. The programme also enjoyed support from the Ministry of Education, the National Directorate of Employment, and industry stakeholders.
