The Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, on Monday held strategic talks with Dr. Iyabo Masha, Director of the Group of 24 (G-24), ahead of Nigeria’s assumption of the group’s chairmanship in 2025/26 and its hosting of the Technical Group Meeting in Abuja in early 2026. The discussions centered on Nigeria’s leadership role in shaping global economic policies and advancing the priorities of developing nations.
Minister Edun reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to promoting inclusive global growth, stating that under its chairmanship, the country would push to strengthen the voice of the Global South in international policy. He highlighted Nigeria’s key priorities, including fast-tracking the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), boosting intra-African trade, developing regional value chains, mobilizing long-term capital through green finance and public-private partnerships, and driving industrialisation with renewable energy solutions.
Dr. Masha praised Nigeria’s proactive engagement and readiness to assume leadership of the G-24, stressing the importance of aligning its agenda with ongoing global reforms in trade, industrialisation, international tax cooperation, and climate finance. She noted that Nigeria’s leadership presents an opportunity to spotlight Africa’s economic aspirations at a time of heightened global economic challenges.
